One of The SunnySide Band’s Favorites

Carol Phillips Autoharp

In 1927 Ralph Peer set up a make-shift recording studio in an empty furniture store in Bristol, TN.  Among the many musicians that came to record was a shy trio from Maces Springs in southwestern Virginia.  Alvin Pleasant (AP) Delaney Carter, his wife Sara and Maybelle Carter, who was Sara’s cousin and AP’s sister-in-law had bumped their way down to Bristol in AP’s Model A.  Peer would remember, “as soon as I heard Sara’s voice, that was it!  I knew it was going to be wonderful.”  The Original Carter Family recorded six sides on August 1 and 2, 1927.  Their songs became the shared heirloom of musicians and music-lovers around the world.
